First thing you should probably do is to improve your “sleep hygiene.” In plain English this means having good bedtime habits that make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
How to improve your Sleep Hygiene:
- Make sure you are comfortable in your bed.
- Minimize all possible sleep distractions: keep it dark and quiet. Use earplugs or eyeshades if needed.
- Keep your bedroom at a comfortable temperature–not too cold, not too hot–just the way it is right for you. But make sure that this comfortable temperature setting is maintained through ought the night.
- Turn away your alarm clock so that its glow doesn’t bother you, and you can’t see the time ticking away. Don’t watch the clock—it can cause anxiety about sleep.
- If you share a bed, get a large bed with two different mattresses, so that two of you don’t disturb each other while sleeping.
- Don’t look at a TV, computers, or anything else very bright for at least a half an hour before trying to sleep.
